After looking at the established quality areas for premium grape production in South Australia, Victoria and NSW, Greg & Libby Gallagher established a vineyard in the Hall – Murrumbateman area of the Canberra District in 1995. The quality of the fruit being produced and the unrecognised potential of the region convinced them that the future would see the Canberra District recognised for premium wine production.
In the 15 years Greg has been in the Canberra District he has won trophies for the Gallagher Shiraz (Best Shiraz, Best Dry Red and Champion Wine of Show), the Gallagher Blanc de Blancs (Best Sparkling Wine, Champion Wine of Show) and the Gallagher Riesling (Best Dry White).
The Gallagher Riesling has won the ‘Top Gold’ at 2 of the last 3 Canberra District Wine Shows and was rated by Australia’s top wine critic, James Halliday, as amongst the best in Australia with a 96 point award for the 2011.
The latest result for Gallagher Wines is the Winestate Magazine award for the Champion Sparkling Wine of 2015. The 2009 Blanc de Blanc was noted to be ” An exceptional wine, showing great style and elegance.”
Greg and Libby are building a reputation for premium wines, using the best fruit from their own vineyards and some selected growers in the district. Greg has the proven ability and experience to ensure the wines will be amongst the finest examples of the styles.
The philosophy of winemaking at Gallagher Wines is to ensure all wines are made around a ‘core’ of fruit flavour as the heart of every wine. The aromas will give the first indication of the flavour, showing the richness and vibrancy of the fruit. The palate ia balanced with the flavours being rich and persistent and have a matching texture to enhance and compliment the flavour. The overall enjoyment of good wine is the combination, in a seamless whole, of aroma, flavour and texture that is satisfying, balanced and built around the flavours of the premium fruit.
